DoctorsWithoutBorders

A severe malnutrition crisis has hit Niger, and the international community has been tragically slow to respond. A drought coupled with a horrific locust invasion has put more than 2.5 million people on the brink of starvation, including 800,000 young children “at risk,” according to the World Food Program.  People have resorted to eating leaves, weeds, bark and roots.

Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières {MSF}), an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by wars, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, is on the scene to help in Africa.

MSF has set up 31 centers throughout the country, and has treated more than 20,000 children suffering from severe malnutrition, mobilizing 50 international aid workers and 450 locally hired staff. Nonetheless, young children are dying every day.

According to MSF, their decision to intervene is based solely on an independent assessment of people's needs — not on political, economic, or religious interests. MSF does not take sides or intervene.

When crises unfold, MSF volunteers make themselves and their skills available on short notice, usually dedicating six to twelve months to each assignment. Their expenses are covered and they receive a modest stipend.

MSF provides direct medical care coupled with a spotlight on the causes of suffering. MSF volunteers have spoken out against atrocities they have witnessed — from Chechnya to Sudan.

International governments have slowly responded to a UN appeal for $16 million to aid Niger. Even so, getting food into Niger is a major challenge even if funding is available. Neighboring countries, such as Nigeria and Mali, are experiencing their own food shortages and are unable to give much help. There is little hope to children who are hungry right now.

To help out, either as a volunteer or with a donation, check their website at: http://www.doctorswithoutborders.com

News About Our World

Update on the
Iraq War

Iraq War

altrofiraqmini02As of early August, according to CNN, “There have been 2,022 coalition troop deaths, 1,830 Americans, 93 Britons, 13 Bulgarians, one Dane, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Hungarian, 26 Italians, one Kazakh, one Latvian, 17 Poles, one Salvadoran, three Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 18 Ukrainians in the war in Iraq as of August 8, 2005. The list below is the names of the soldiers, Marines, airmen, sailors and Coast Guardsmen whose families have been notified of their deaths by each country's government. At least 13,769 U.S. troops have been wounded in action, according to the Pentagon. The Pentagon does not report the number of non-hostile wounded. ”

That is 770 more deaths since we at Olvera Street for Dia De Los Muertos created the altar on October 28, 2004, and is not counting the estimated 100,000-200,000 Iraqi deaths including women and children.

The "Altar of the Iraq War" was created to honor and respect the memories and lives of all those who have died. To learn more about the altar, click here!

* (The "Altar of the Iraq War" was created by six artists and does not necessarily reflect the thoughts of the Olvera Street merchants or El Pueblo Historic Monument.)

boots02The American Friends Service Committee’s widely acclaimed traveling exhibition, “Eyes Wide Open,” visited Los Angeles in mid-March.   The outdoor art exhibit graphically showed the human cost of the Iraq War to the United States in the form of empty boots.

LOS ANGELES’ 224th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED WITH

“LOS POBLADORES -
WALK TO LOS ANGELES

LOS ANGELES’ 224th BIRTHDAY

September 4th Historic Re-enactment
Commemorates the Founding of the City

San Gabriel and Los Angeles’ shared history comes alive Sunday, September 4, 2005, with “Los Pobladores – Walk to Los Angeles” celebrating Los Angeles’ 224th birthday.

The annual Walk represents a key chapter in California’s history, with the re-enactment of the nine-mile journey of the original Spanish settlers of Los Angeles, known as Los Pobladores, from San Gabriel Mission to the Los Angeles River where, on September 4, 1781, they founded El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles.  The Walk coincides with Los Angeles’ actual founding date and planned birthday festivities at El Pueblo Historical Monument on Sunday, September 4th.

Everyone is invited to wake up early Sunday morning, September 4, lace up their walking shoes and join the 6 a.m. Walk celebrating San Gabriel and Los Angeles’ shared, living history.
