Bienvenidos!
August is heating up in more ways than one on Olvera Street, as the Sunday Summer Music Festival continues on the Olvera Street Plaza.
Grand Performances summer series continues their free concert series at the nearby California Plaza throughout the month.
If arts color your world, take a gander at LACMA’s “Arts in Latin America,” a multimedia presentation of about 250 pieces.
Mexican muralist legends Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros will be featured in new “moving technology” at the Museum of Latin American Art in its “Monumental Outdoor Media Presentations.”
If you prefer your art a little more of the grassroots variety (or perhaps cement-meets-Charles Shaw), try the self-guided Downtown L.A. Art Walk.
Over the hill the Dodgers will host the 10th Annual Viva Los Dodgers Concert August 18 in the Dodger Stadium parking lot .
See the story of Ryan Hreljac, a Canadian teenager who has single-handedly spearheaded a campaign to bring clean water to nearly a half-million people who previous did not have access to it. Read it.
In between all the Spiderman and the Spiderpigs and the Harry Potters and Transformers of the movie theatres this summer you may find an important new film: “The 11th Hour.” See it before it’s to late.
The “Girl From U.N.C.L.E.,” Stefanie Powers is back in “On Your Toes” at the Freud Playhouse on the UCLA Campus, where a cigar is still a cigar, although you can’t smoke inside because of state law, but you can get a discount because you’re cool and subscribe to this newsletter.
Plus Cirque du Soleil returns to L.A. to open Corteo at the Inglewood Forum on August 23. Read on….
Make sure to visit our “See L.A.!” so you can plan your summer with your family and friends. We have links to various places right here in Los Angeles for you to explore. It’s a great page to bookmark for your reference.
All this and more, this month ....

Ryan Hreljac is entering the 11th grade this autumn south of Ontario, Canada. If he’s asked what he did this summer, he might mention “nothing new,” just traveling the world, saving more lives. But then Ryan has been doing things like that since he was six.
“In my Grade 1 classroom, my teacher said that people have to walk 10 kilometers to walk to a dirty mud hole. I felt we shouldn’t live in a world like that.” So Ryan raised $70 to fund clean water. It was a start. It grew to more than $1 million.
“I’m just your regular, average kid,” Ryan said on his web site. Yet he knows that “every day 6,000 children die without access to clean water,” as he recently told CNN. “That’s like 20 jumbo jets crashing every year. I feel that we shouldn’t live in a world like that.”
Ryan traveled to Uganda when he was 10 to see one of his wells and the affect it had on a population.
Thus far the not-for-profit Ryan’s Well Foundation, a registered charity, has put 266 wells in 12 countries, bringing clean water to more than 435,000 people.
Would you like to make a difference?

News About Our World Update Iraq War
At Olvera-Street.com, the spirit of giving, understanding, compassion, and support goes far beyond our doors.
As of July 30, 2007, according to a CNN count: “There have been 3,945 coalition deaths -- 3,651 Americans, two Australians, 163 Britons, 13 Bulgarians, one Czech, seven Danes, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Fijian, one Hungarian, 33 Italians, one Kazakh, one Korean, three Latvian, 21 Poles, two Romanians, five Salvadoran, four Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 18 Ukrainians -- in the war in Iraq. The list below is the names of the soldiers, Marines, airmen, sailors and Coast Guardsmen whose deaths have been reported by their country's governments. The list also includes seven employees of the U.S. Defense Department. That is 52 more deaths since June 9, 2007.
At least 26,953 U.S. troops have been wounded in action, according to the Pentagon. That is 395 more than July 9, 2007.
In 2004 we honored the 1250 Americans who had died in the Iraqi desert; that list has now grown with an additional 2,695 lives cut short. Note: May 1, 2007 marked the four-year anniversary when President Bush announced “Mission Accomplished!” and the end of hostilities in Iraq.
The first “Altar of the Iraq War” was created on October 28, 2004 to honor and respect the memories and lives of all those who have died. NOTE: The figures do not count the estimated 100,000-200,000 Iraqi deaths, including women and children.
The original altar was featured in a children’s book: “Day of the Dead: A Celebration of Life And Death” by Capstone Press and distributed in bookstores around the United States as well as on Amazon and other prominent retailers. National Geographic and NBC News also came out and filmed the exhibition last year.
The “Altar of the Iraq War” was re-created at last year’s “El Amor Eterno” Dia De Los Muertos Juried Exhibition at the Pico House Gallery. There were several thousands of visitors including children who were very touched and left notes of love at the altar. The gallery was created to be a place of healing, understanding and a place of education. To view the Curator’s philosophy of Dia De Los Muertos, click here!
* (The "Altar of the Iraq War" honoring the dead was created by six artists: Ginette Rondeau, Juliane Backmann, Al Herion, Bonjunnie Comostiles, Gabriela Quintero, and John Trausch. The altar does not necessarily reflect the thoughts of the Olvera Street merchants or El Pueblo Historic Monument.)
We send our love to them, their families, and dear friends.
The altar was dedicated to their memories so they won’t be forgotten, true to the meaning and spirit of íDa De Los Muertos!

“The 11th Hour”
An important new film, “The 11th Hour,” opens August 17. Produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio in a fast-paced look at the earth’s environment and practical solutions for restoring the planet’s ecosystems.
Disappearing forests, widening deserts, melting arctic seas, and the racking permafrost. The earth has grown warmer. Not since a meteor hit planet earth 55 million years ago have so many forms of life gone extinct.
Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, CIA head R. James Woolsey, Stephen Hawking and many other scientists are consulted on the unprecedented global crises that we are facing today. While some may “The 11th Hour” a horror flick, it will be officially listed as a eco-documentary.

The Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach will continue with its “Monumental Outdoor Media Presentations” in August.
“You’ve always thought that murals can’t move, that it’s an art form you can only see if you go to the place where they are painted but now with this new technology the murals can come to you.” Screams the MoLAA screamer.
Saturday, August 4, is the 50th anniversary of the death of a giant of 20th century art, Mexican legend Diego Rivera. Diego painted his murals throughout the U.S. and Mexico. His art helped redefine modern Mexican culture and the way Mexicans looked at themselves. The presentation will be at 8:30 PM
One week later, Saturday, August 11, one of the most controversial figures in the history of Latin American art, David Alfaro Siqueiros will be featured. Siqueiros became the champion for modern realist murals, creating monumental art in the midst of social upheaval. Also at 8:30 PM.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art will present The Arts in Latin America, 1492-1820, an ambitious, multimedia, presentation of approximately 250 works of art created in Latin America during the roughly three centuries between the European invasions and the creation of independent states. Opening August 5 in the Art of Americas Building, The Arts in Latin America, will disregard the political boundaries created in the early 19th century, instead exploring both the artistic differences and commonalities in a synthetic context. Examples of painting, sculpture, feather-work, shell-inlaid furniture, objects in gold and silver, ceramics, and textiles will be borrowed from public and private collections throughout the Americas and Europe.
This exhibition is curated by Joseph J. Rishel, the Gisela and Dennis Alter Senior Curator of European Painting before 1900 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Suzanne Stratton-Pruitt, working with an international committee of scholars and in collaboration with the curators at the participating museums. Ilona Katzew, LACMA curator of Latin American Art, and a renowned specialist of Spanish colonial art, is in charge of the presentation at LACMA. The exhibition will run through October 28.
For more information: www.lacma.org * LACMA is Free After Five. There is no charge for general admission after 5 PM, even on weekends. General admission allows you to visit all open LACMA galleries and all special exhibitions except those that are separately ticketed. What's more, kids under 18 can always enter free through NexGen.
