THREE-DAY CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATION AT

EL PUEBLO HISTORICAL MONUMENT

The Birthplace of Los Angeles -
A Flurry of Activity with Live Entertainment,
Carnival Rides and Talent Contests

LOS ANGELES * A three day Cinco de Mayo celebration begins on Friday, May 5, 2006 and continues Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7 at El Pueblo Historical Monument in downtown Los Angeles, home of world famous Olvera Street.  The weekend will be packed with free entertainment including a carnival with rides, games and food for the entire family to enjoy. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla and is symbolic of Mexican pride, unity and patriotism. It is an important day not only for the Mexican community but for everyone in Los Angeles.

The Santa Ana High School Marching Band will kick-off the festivities at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 5 on the Plaza main stage, followed by the lively mariachi sounds of Ricardo Duque and Noe Sandoval.  Los Jaraneros will also present a colorful dance program from the Mexican state of Vera Cruz. Various bands representing the regional musical styles of Mexico will perform throughout the three day Cinco de Mayo celebration bringing with them an eclectic mix of traditional Latin jazz, R&B, rock and hip-hop sounds. The revelry of this exciting weekend continues with more activities, events, live music and dance performances scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

El Pueblo Historical Monument is located between Main and Los Angeles Streets in downtown Los Angeles.  Entertainment is scheduled from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 5, 2006; 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on both Saturday, May 6, 2006 and Sunday, May 7, 2006. Public parking is available at the lot located on Cesar Chavez Avenue. Public transportation is available via Metrolink, MTA rail and bus service to Union Station.

About El Pueblo Historical Monument

El Pueblo Historical Monument is the oldest section of Los Angeles and is the site where the city was founded in 1781.  The forty-four acre park consists of numerous historic buildings, museums, a beautiful outdoor plaza and the world famous Mexican marketplace on Olvera Street. The Monument represents the rich history, culture and ethnic diversity that is the foundation of the City of Los Angeles.
