Candle_Maker02Many artists and craftspeople were associated with the street, including Leo Carrillo Theatre actors, the Yale Puppeteers, a leather worker, blacksmith, a glass blower, a potter and a candle maker. Countless musicians, Aztec dancers, mirachis, and ballet florlorico companies have performed. In addition, artists  and artisans from Mexico have exhibited their work in both the El Pueblo Gallery and the Cultural Mexican Institute. Several of the merchants in Olvera Street today are descended of the originally as vendors from the 1930s.

Over the years many well known persons have visited Olvera Street, including: Charlie Chaplin, Eleanor Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, President Ronald Reagan, President Richard Nixon, President Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Henry Ford, Pricilla Presley, Oscar de la Hoya, Cheech Marin, Vicki Carr, Dr. Rudy Acuna, John Barrymore, Greta Garbo, Mario Moreno (“Cantinflas”), Edward James Olmos, Robert Dinero, Ben Kingsley, Rigoberta Manchu (Nobel Peace Winner), Placido Domingo, Simon Silva, Jorge Ramos, Penelope Cruz, Alfred Hitchcock, Salma Hayek, Lalo Guerreo, Jennifer Lopez, Victor Villasenor, Ceasar Chavez, Delores Huerta, and King Juan Carlos I of Spain.

Olvera Street continues to be a major tourist attraction attracting as many as two million visitors per year. It is now part of El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, which is a department of the City of Los Angeles.
