This month we are featuring three simple favorite comfort foods: Guacamole Dip, Hot Corn Tortilla Chips and my mother’s delicious Grilled Flank Steak Burritos.

News About Our World
Ricky Martin Foundation

American Red Cross International Response

|
The City of Los Angeles is made up of many races and religions, cultures and languages. Differences must not alienate or frighten us, not when we can embrace and celebrate them. At Olvera-Street.com we are more interested in our common threads than in common threats. We support efforts to improve the lives of people not only in Los Angeles, but throughout the world’s village.
In July we are focusing on the continuing efforts to assist the victims of the Asian tsunami orphans.
Singer Ricky Martin, a Puerto-Rico American, took a sabbatical from his "Livin' la Vida Loca" pop music career two years ago to drag that spotlight that was following him onto the shores of Thailand, where tens of thousands of homeless orphans fight a daily battle for survival. Visit www.peopleforchildren.org or click here to learn more about the Ricky Martin Foundation and his charity efforts.

Other organizations that are working to help the victims:
Oprah's Angel Network funds programs that help people rebuild and strengthen their lives. The Angel Network does not take funds designated for a specific project. Oprah's Angel Network has projects throughout the world focusing on education, women and children. Donations will be used in keeping with the Angel Network's mission where needed most. Visit https://www.oprah.com
Mercy Corps is helping with the immediate needs of the people. Their Cash for Work program pays many of the locals to clean up the area, giving them money to take care of their families. Visit www.mercycorps.org.
Free the Children's Adopt a Village program plans to rebuild schools and send school supplies, and to build health clinics and help provide clean water that is much needed to the people of Arugam Bay and Pottuvil. Visit www.freethechildren.com.
Habitat for Humanity plans to build transitional houses with verandas and sanitary facilities. Visit www.habitat.org.
As this issue of the Olvera-Street.com goes to press, news of the tragic terrorist bombings in London is filling the airwaves. As the victims are still being attended to, the British Red Cross is yet to issue an appeal for funds.
However, the American Red Cross reports that you can make a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which provides immediate and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance, and other support to those in need. Call 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish).
The British Red Cross may be contacted directly at: http://www.redcross.org.uk . The American Red Cross’s web site is at www.redcross.org.

News About Our World Update Iraq War

|
As of early July, according to CNN, “There have been 1,928 coalition troop deaths, 1,741 Americans, 89 Britons, 13 Bulgarians, one Dane, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Hungarian, 25 Italians, one Kazakh, one Latvian, 17 Poles, one Salvadoran, three Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 18 Ukrainians in the war in Iraq as of June 28, 2005. The list below is the names of the soldiers, Marines, airmen, sailors and Coast Guardsmen whose families have been notified of their deaths by each country's government. At least 13,190 U.S. troops have been wounded in action, according to the Pentagon. The Pentagon does not report the number of non-hostile wounded.”
That is 676 more deaths since we at Olvera Street for Dia De Los Muertos created the altar on October 28, 2004, and is not counting the estimated 100,000-200,000 Iraqi deaths including women and children.
The "Altar of the Iraq War" was created to honor and respect the memories and lives of all those who have died. To learn more about the altar, click here!
* (The "Altar of the Iraq War" was created by six artists and does not necessarily reflect the thoughts of the Olvera Street merchants or El Pueblo Historic Monument.)
The American Friends Service Committee’s widely acclaimed traveling exhibition, “Eyes Wide Open,” visited Los Angeles in mid-March. The outdoor art exhibit graphically showed the human cost of the Iraq War to the United States in the form of empty boots.
