March 2005

Bienvenidos!

In March we celebrate beloved heroes who made great sacrifices for the people and nations they loved. In honor of them, we encourage you to make a difference within your community, your family and friends.  Volunteer to help someone.  You could be a friend to a lonely latch key child, mentor someone who would appreciate your experience and guidance, or volunteer to a worthy nonprofit. One person can make such a world of difference. Your heart will be well rewarded.

Should you like to share your story of inspiration, please submit it to us. We look forward to hearing from you.

News About Our World
Update

boots02The American Friends Service Committee’s widely acclaimed traveling exhibition, “Eyes Wide Open,” is visiting Los Angeles in mid-March.   The outdoor art exhibit graphically shows the human cost of the Iraq War to the United States in the form of empty boots.  We encourage everyone to see it.

altrofiraqmini02As of mid-March, there had been 1,691 coalition troop deaths, 1,517 Americans, 86 Britons, eight Bulgarians, one Dane, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Hungarian, 21 Italians, one Kazakh, one Latvian, 17 Poles, one Salvadoran, three Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 17 Ukrainians in the war in Iraq as of March 15, 2005 according to CNN. That is 439 more deaths since we (at Olvera Street for Dia De Los Muertos) created the altar on October 28, 2004, and is not counting the estimated 100,000-200,000 Iraqi deaths.

Recent History
Fiesta’s on Olvera Street

As Angelinos, we have been given the gift of living in so many cultures. Last month, Olvera Street was proud to celebrate the traditions of life in México, France and China.  We enjoyed the sharing the culture and festivities with our visitors, family and friends. The celebrations were complete with music, costumes, and a colorful procession throughout Olvera Street. These events were free to the public.

Mardi Gras

Tuesday
February 8
12 pm - 10 pm

Mardi Gras (“Fat Tuesday”) on Olvera StreetAmerican college students home from Paris in the 1820s brought the bizarre party rituals of Mardi Gras to New Orleans, Louisiana. The scholars had celebrated Mardi Gras in France, and now home, they saw no reason to stop.

The tradition has held, and today in New Orleans, Paris and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Mardi Gras (“Fat Tuesday”) means a traditional huge annual funfest.

Here in Los Angeles, it doesn't take much to awaken the spirits of Olvera Street, and Mardi Gras was a great excuse to join in. On Fat Tuesday, February 8, from the stroke of midnight until 10 p.m., Olvera Street featured Brazilian singing and dancing, a colorful parade, floats, a costume contest, and a burning of a piñata representing evil spirits.
