October 2006

Bienvenidos! Welcome to October, as the leaves fall and the days become shorter as we wind our way toward the annual Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) fests. What better place to celebrate the cerebral, festive holiday than at Olvera Street, the historical birthplace of Los Angeles.

Day of the Dead has transcended the international border in recent years, and is now fully celebrated in the United States as well as Mexico.  Here in the City of Angels, there will be a major art exhibit, “Viva El Amor Eterno” at the Pico House Gallery at the south end of Olvera Street, opening on Friday, Oct. 27, and continuing through November 26. Come by and view the heartfelt works by some of Los Angeles’ top artists.  Bring the entire family to journey this wonderful tradition of honoring the beloved. The public is invited to participate. This event is free.

But that’s not all...

The Olvera Street Merchants will hold their annual celebration October 18 to November 2, which will feature childrens’ workshops, community altars, the Muertos Festival on October 28 and 29, and the candlelight Novenaria procession,

All this and more, all month on Olvera Street. Bookmark our *See L.A* link as a reference, and come see us at Olvera Street.

We are very fortunate to have internationally known Elvis Castillo from Oaxaca, Mexico, demonstrate his magical art of wood carvings during the “Viva El Amor Eterno” exhibition.
Work by Maestro Elvis Castillo
The artistic wood-carving techniques of the Zapotec people are legedary, honed over hundreds of generation. Each of the wooden sculptures are hand-carved from the wood of the Copal (or Copillo) tree. Each piece is hand-sanded and painted in bright and exciting motifs. Oaxacan wood carvings were featured on the cover of the Smithsonian magazine (May, 1991).

“Tanscendence/ Regeneración”

The butterfly has been chosen as the icon for this year's Day of the Dead celebration. It symbolizes the hope that this cycle of life will also touch all of us in today's convoluted world. Because along with the remembrances of our departed loved ones, the butterfly can also serve to remind us of our desperate need today, for renewal, for healing, and for moving forward toward a better society.

Movies to See
Now available on DVD

“The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada”

A recent film that came and went very fast in the theaters that is now available on DVD and VHS is:

“The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada”

Julio Cedillo, playing the title role, is shot by a Border Patrolman and quickly buried in the Texas desert. The body is found, and then reburied in the town cemetery. Tommy Lee Jones plays Pete Perkins, a friend of the deceased who kidnaps the Patrolman and forces him to disinter the body. With the lawman captive, he ties the corpse to a mule, and sets out to honor Estrada’s request to be buried in his Mexican hometown. But first he has to find it. Rating: R

Deeply felt and full of dark humor that reflects the absurdities inherent in life (and death), Jones' movie is ultimately an affirmation that every human being is important - not just to friends and family, but to society as a whole.”

Somebody’s Children

News About Our World Update
Iraq War

At Olvera-Street.com, the spirit of giving, understanding, compassion,
and support goes far beyond our doors.

Somebody’s Children - the Iraq War Altar

viewing the Altar for the Iraq WarAs of October 9, 2006, according to a CNN count: “There have been 2,977 coalition deaths, 2,744 Americans, two Australians, 118 Britons, 13 Bulgarians, six Danes, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Fijian, one Hungarian, 32 Italians, one Kazakh, one Latvian, 17 Poles, two Romanians, two Salvadoran, three Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 18 Ukrainians in the war in Iraq.

The list below is the names of the soldiers, Marines, airmen, sailors and Coast Guardsmen whose deaths have been reported by their country's governments. The list also includes seven employees of the U.S. Defense Department.  At least 20,687 U.S. troops have been wounded in action, according to the Pentagon.”

That is 110 more deaths and more than 914 U.S. troops that have been wounded since last month.

Maria's LetterThat is a total of 1,727 more deaths since the original 1250 deaths we honored at Olvera Street for the 2004 Dia De Los Muertos. Note, May 1 was the three year anniversary when President Bush announced “Mission Accomplished!” and the end of hostilities in Iraq.

You can view casualties in the war in Afghanistan and examine U.S. war casualties dating back to the Revolutionary War.” at the CNN web site.

The “Altar of the Iraq War” was created on October 28, 2004 to honor and respect the memories and lives of all those who have died. NOTE: It does not count the estimated 100,000-200,000 Iraqi deaths, including women and children.

* (The "Altar of the Iraq War" honoring the dead was created by six artists and does not necessarily reflect the thoughts of the Olvera Street merchants or El Pueblo Historic Monument.)

We send our love to them, their families, and dear friends. The “Altar of the Iraq War” will be re-created at this year’s “El Amor Eterno” Dia De Los Muertos Juried Exhibition at El Pueblo Gallery.

The altar will dedicated to their memories so they won’t be forgotten,
true to the meaning and spirit of íDa De Los Muertos!

A Family Reunion, National Affirmaiton

"For all eternity,” muses an old man, “
my descendants will remember me and,
on the eve of every second of November,
I will come back to them.

I will find the house filled with food, incense,
the light of candles, and warmth.

And I will come in and, forever and ever,
that one night of the year,
I will be among my own!”
