The Olvera Street Merchants and El Pueblo Historical Monument will again hold their annual Dia De Los Muertos festivities this year. The event offers free children’s workshops Wednesdays through Fridays beginning October 12 through November 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The workshops include mask, flower and necklace painting and will provide students with a history of this colorful and beloved Mexican celebration.
On the weekends enjoy face painting, street theater performances, mariachi, Aztec dancers, ballet folklorico, piñatas and other fun filled family activities. The Dia de Los Muertos traditional altars will also be on display throughout the Plaza area beginning in mid-October.
The traditional 2nd NOVENARIA will feature a candlelight procession to be held nightly from October 25 through November 2 starting at 6:30 p.m. It begins at the historic Avila Adobe on Olvera Street and evokes the special memories of deceased loved ones. Following the Novenaria, pan de muerto (sweet bread) and champurrado (a Mexican hot chocolate beverage) will be available for everyone to enjoy.

What’s New at Olvera-Street.com “LATINOS IN HOLLYWOOD”

|
In honor of Latino Heritage Month, we featured “Latinos In Hollywood,” a lavish pictorial exhibit highlighting the history, achievements and participation of Latinos in the Hollywood film industry which spans from the silent movie era to our current Latino movie stars.
“Latino’s In Hollywood” exhibition was first featured at El Pueblo Gallery on Olvera Street and we are delighted to share with you again online. We will be adding more photos every month.
The exhibit will currently be online only and will continue for several months, as we will add different eras of Latino achievements in Hollywood. The collection begins with silent films and will continue through the golden and glamorous era of the 1940s.
This month, we have added achievements in the 1950’s. We hope you will enjoy the exhibition!

News About Our World
At Olvera-Street.com, the spirit of giving, understanding, and support goes far beyond our doors.
|
As we approach Dia De Los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”) on November 2, it is time to reflect and to rejoice and cherish our loved ones in this world, and to remember and celebrate those that have passed onto the next world.
The tragedies of recent weeks have brought the topics of life and death into the forefront of many people’s minds.
The 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit South Asia in early October has caused so much suffering and devastation that have our recent flooding in the Gulf Coast region seems shockingly slight in comparison.
Relief operations are under way in Asia to help tens of thousands of injured survivors and an estimated two million people left homeless and exposed to the cold; but weather conditions, broken transportation links and the remote mountainous terrain are slowing progress.
The United Nations estimates the full death toll to be 30,000, though it may still be weeks until the all the bodies are counted. But in the meantime, millions need our help. Here are some of the top organizations that are soliciting your help:
American Red Cross, International Response Fund P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013 800-HELP-NOW www.redcross.org
AmeriCares, 88 Hamilton Ave, Stamford, CT 06902 800-486-HELP www.americares.org
Habitat for Humanity International South Asia Earthquake 121 Habitat St., Americus, GA 31709 800-422-4828 www.habitat.org
International Medical Corps Pakistan Earthquake Relief Fund 1919 Santa Monica Blvd., Suite 300, Santa Monica, CA 90404-1950 800-481-4462 www.imcworldwide.org
Save the Children USA 54 Wilton Road, Westport, CT 06880 800-728-3843 www.savethechildren.org
U.S. Fund for UNICEF 333 E. 38th Street, New York, NY 10016 800-4-UNICEF www.unicefusa.org
Meanwhile, the cleanup of the Gulf Area horror continues, and although the city may be slowly rebuilt, it may take even longer for individuals’ broken lives and broken dreams. While our government leaders still must answer why they ignored reports of the fated levees or why the rescue effort was so lackadaisical, there are still scores of desperate, hungry, homeless and displaced Americans. And in the Land of Plenty, there still is plenty that can be done to help.
The Habitat for Humanity International is in the forefront. A nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization is working with victims on the rebuilding of simple, decent, affordable homes: http://www.habitat.org
The American Red Cross may be contacted at: http://www.redcross.org
The National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters, an umbrella organization that helps coordinate disaster relief, is at: http://www.nvoad.org

News About Our World
Update on the Iraq War

|
As of early October, according to CNN: “There have been 2,161 coalition troop deaths, 1,965 Americans, 96 Britons, 13 Bulgarians, two Danes, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Hungarian, 26 Italians, one Kazakh, one Latvian, 17 Poles, one Salvadoran, three Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 18 Ukrainians in the war in Iraq as of October 10, 2005. The list on the site are names of the soldiers, Marines, airmen, sailors and Coast Guardsmen whose families have been notified of their deaths by each country's government. At least 14,362 U.S. troops have been wounded in action, according to the Pentagon. The Pentagon does not report the number of non-hostile wounded. You may see a historical look at U.S. war casualties and view casualties in the war in Afghanistan at this site.
That is 911 more deaths since the original 1250 deaths we had honored at Olvera Street for the 2004 Dia De Los Muertos. The “Altar of the Iraq War” was created on October 28, 2004 to honor and respect the memories and lives of all those who have died. NOTE: It does not count the estimated 100,000-200,000 Iraqi deaths, including women and children. To learn more about the altar, click here!
* (The "Altar of the Iraq War" was created by six artists and does not necessarily reflect the thoughts of the Olvera Street merchants or El Pueblo Historic Monument.)
